@Leigh, it shouldn't have to be 'tight'. It should be tight enough so it doesn't fall/slip down. Make sure the contacts are wet before you put it one. That could help. Also, have it centered over your breastbone and right by your sternum. If so, you should get good readings. If you continue to have issues, I might suggest contacting customer service, get a return authorization and demand a new one.
The second time I wore this HR monitor it worked better. I had tightened the strap a lot even though I thought that it was already tight the first time. Well, this time it connected pretty fast and zeroed out on me just once.

i like my old polar better too, but with this one i've found that if i take some water and wet the contact area on my chest before i put it on it works great. i lose contact doing certain exercises if its not tight.
I am having some trouble with the heart rate monitor as well. My guess is that it is because I have quite a hairy chest (check out my pics if you don't believe it ;-) ). However after a few minutes of ENERGY! it looked like it was working well. Must've been the sweat. But it kinda messes up the average. Oh well ... I'll see how it works next time around ... which will be in about 3 or 4 hours ...
It seems like the one I got with the classic DVDs works better ... but a friend of mine has that one currently.
